Where, Oh Where, Is Wyoming?

With all the election hullabaloo following the Iowa caucuses, the Wyoming caucus came and went with very little fanfare.

Wyoming has traditionally leaned towards the Republican ticket, so there was very little surprise when the caucuses handed Mitt Romney the majority of their delegates for the Republican National Convention. It appears that these early primary dates may be backfiring though. States wanted to be included in the early primaries so they could be seen as part of the ‘movers and shakers’ crowd. The idea was to get in on all the mega-bucks spent by candidates, their followers, and the media as they move into each state to hustle for their campaigns. It really ‘flopped’ in Wyoming, as almost nobody even bothered to show up, including the media.

As for Romney, a man who has an incredible track record of success, the win was expected. However, because no one is really paying attention, it remains to be seen whether this can be considered a boost to his campaign. Financing his own campaign from the start, Romney has been accused of trying to ‘buy’ the nomination. (This is a real ‘hoot’ when you consider that every candidate really has to ‘buy’ their way into our collective subconscious. TV time is expensive and I have yet to see a candidate who wasn’t looking for contributions, even the massively under-funded till now, Mike Huckabee.)

Apparently, the Romney game plan was to use the early primary dates to snowball his campaign, starting with a big win in Iowa, then New Hampshire, two states where his camp has spent a massive amount of precious time, as well as money. Huckabee’s evangelical-backed upset in Iowa put a real crimp in the momentum. Now Romney is in New Hampshire in a heated contest with John McCain.

The Democratic candidates barely even looked at Wyoming, although Wyoming DOES have a Democratic Party contingent. They even have their own blog and website now. But Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John Edwards left Iowa after their own upset results and headed directly to New Hampshire to scramble for votes in Tuesday’s primary.

Poor Wyoming!
