Southern Politics in Action!
The South Carolina Democratic Primary is ongoing at this very moment. The weather is cold but the roads are clear. Once again, the number of polling places has been reduced, but news stations and the Democratic Party have notified potential voters in advance, so they can determine where they need to go to vote. It remains to be seen if the voting machines will work today, unlike during the South Carolina Republican Primary. If you remember, Republican voters had to deal with snow and icy roads, only to arrive at their regular polling places, to find many of them closed with no advance notice. Plus, many were turned away from the open polling places because the voting machines were broken and there were no paper ballots. What a fiasco!
The Democratic debate in South Carolina was particularly combative, and the frontrunner campaigns have been much nastier to each other this week. This is a hotly-contested race, with Barack Obama counting on the support of African-American voters, who comprise 50% of registered voters in the state. Hillary Clinton is trying to win the state like her husband did when he was running for President. In fact, Bill Clinton has been seen here campaigning for his wife so strongly, that local pundits are calling it “the Billary campaign”.
Meanwhile, South Carolina is do-or-die for John Edwards. Unlike the other candidates, he is the hometown boy, born in SC. He needs a show of support in SC or his campaign just may be over. He has been criss-crossing the state making campaign speeches, and even been televised singing “Amazing Grace” with a group of his supporters. This has been a big week for John Edwards. First, he was the only calm candidate during the SC debates, then he got his hair mussed on national television by David Letterman, and today he learns who will win the South Carolina Democratic Primary.
Who will the winner be? Hillary Clinton & Bill, Obama Barack & Oprah, or John Edwards, the hometown boy? We shall soon see.
