Romney Quits? Republican Field Narrows!
As of today, Mitt Romney has suspended his campaign for the Republican Presidential nomination “for the good of the Republican Party”. Romney says he is concerned that continued divisiveness among the candidates will damage any chance for the Republicans to prepare a campaign capable of beating the Democrats in November. Whether the eventual Democratic candidate is Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, the Republicans need to unify and eliminate the polarization and animosity that has been building over the last several months.
John McCain now has nearly enough delegates to ensure that he is the nominee, whether Mike Huckabee or Ron Paul stay in the race (race?) or not. Since it now appears that Clinton and Obama will be battling for delegates, probably right up to the Democratic Convention, McCain will be free to concentrate on uniting Republicans behind his candidacy. That will be no easy task, if it is even possible for Mr. Maverick.
Romney’s campaign suspension strikes a blow for conservatives who do not feel that McCain’s record and positions are acceptable. Because he has “suspended” his campaign, rather than ending it, Romney holds-on to his delegates rather than pledging them to another candidate at this time. This may be the time for Mike Huckabee to come from behind and pull off another upset like Iowa. Or perhaps he and Ron Paul (although both deny it) will also withdraw. Who knows what will happen? This race has been one surprise after another.
