Ralph Nader, Good Man, Bad Candidate… Again!
I thought Mike Huckabee was persistent in the face of overwhelming odds. Well, he is, but Ralph Nader has been doing it longer, if not better.
Nader has announced his intention to enter the 2008 Presidential race, AGAIN! This is the fourth time, Nader has thrown his hat in the ring and never really made a dent in the results. The only possible exception could have been the 2000 campaign between George Bush and Al Gore, when Nader’s miniscule 2.7% of the popular vote may have been partly responsible for Gore losing. (That’s the theory Gore supporters cling to anyway.)
The Dems are not happy about Nader re-entering the race. His Green Party supporters would normally come from the ranks of the Democrats, rather than the GOP, thus taking crucial votes in what is already a hotly-contested Democratic preliminary. Both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have been interviewed disparaging Nader’s attempts and motivations.
Ralph Nader made quite a deserved reputation for himself as a consumer advocate, with his 1965 book, “Unsafe at Any Speed.” The book and the ensuing consumer awareness, led by Nader, led to major safety reforms in automobiles and warning labels on cigarette packages. As a consumer advocate, he has been a shining star in America. As a Presidential candidate, his career has been less-than-stellar.
Maybe all those people who are touting New York’s billionaire mayor, Michael Bloomberg, as a candidate can convince him to run. Then we can have a four-party Presidential election! That should shake things up!
