Primary & Caucus Slugfests!
Mike Huckabee started out this morning in his race for the Republican Presidential candidacy with 214 pledged delegates. John McCain, frontrunner and presumptive winner, started out with exactly 500 more delegates than Huckabee - 714 of the 1191 needed for the nomination. So McCain needs fewer delegates to WIN the nomination than Huckabee needs just to catch up to McCain’s numbers - before today’s voting even starts.
There is voting going on in a jumble of primaries and caucuses across the country. Washington state, Louisiana, Kansas, Nebraska and the Virgin Islands conclude this evening, with Maine holding their Democratic caucuses tomorrow (Sunday). But there just aren’t that many delegates at stake today on the Republican side.
For instance, Mike Huckabee is the projected winner in Kansas, but if he does win, he’ll only get 33-39 delegates out of it.
Louisiana and Washington are holding both Democratic and Republican primaries and caucuses for a total of 117 delegates for the Dems and 38 for the GOP. Finally, Nebraska will select 24 of their 31 possible Democratic delegates. So we are not talking big numbers here and virtually no way for Huckabee to close the gap.
Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton continue their state-by-state slugfest, with Obama’s campaign highly optimistic because Hillary has 1063 delegates & Obama has 962 (just 101 less) before today’s results are tabulated.
Speaking of tiny delegate count differences, Ron Paul did slightly better today but won NO delegates again - so he stays at the magic number of 16. Perhaps, like Huckabee, he’s praying for a miracle!
