Politics: Take a Deep Breath!
All of the prognosticators and political pundits are eating a piece of ‘humble pie’ this morning, after predicting that Hillary Clinton’s campaign was falling apart before yesterday’s primary. It did look bad for the New York Senator, especially after her stunning defeat to Barack Obama in the Iowa caucus. Whether it was the swing of independent voters to John McCain on the Republican side, or her emotional appearance on TV, the fact remains that Hillary Clinton won in New Hampshire. As expected, very little was said about John Edwards and he is once again in third place.
Exit polls showed that a large percentage of Clinton voters were women, and that all of those who voted for her felt she was MOST qualified among the Democratic candidates to be Commander in Chief.
On the Republican side, not unexpectedly, John McCain won and he won big! New Hampshire has been where McCain has focused much of his efforts, and he has a history of winning here. He had strong backers, big endorsements from every newspaper and, as I mentioned in a previous post, he looks great and projects confidence. Independent voters that Barack Obama was hoping to sway to his camp went to McCain instead. Exit polls showed that Independents voting for McCain felt HE was the best candidate to be the next Commander in Chief.
Mitt Romney wanted a win here in the next-door-neighbor state to where he served as governor, but he had to settle for second place. An interesting note is that registered Republican voters chose Romney over McCain, but the numbers were nowhere near enough to give him the win. In New Hampshire, it was the Independents who carried the day.
As for the big Iowa winner, Mike Huckabee, he came into New Hampshire at the last minute and charmed voters everywhere he went. Huckabee never expected to make a big showing in New Hampshire, but wherever he went, he got a positive response. Ron Paul and Fred Thompson were the invisible men, but Ron Paul hit the airwaves with a brand new package of ads IMMEDIATELY after the close of polls.
So now it’s on to Michigan for the primaries on Tuesday, January 15th. That gives the candidates one week to sway undecided voters to their individual camps. Since Michigan’s voting system has only registered Republicans voting in the Republican primary and only registered Democrats voting in the Democratic primary, the Michigan results may give us a clearer picture of who has the most support from their party. But then again, maybe not!
