Politics Democrat-Style!
Barack Obama is winning everywhere he goes. Hillary Clinton’s once-upon-a-time lock on the Democratic Presidential nomination appears to be experiencing real setbacks. But while Obama’s supporters are enthusiastically declaring that their man will win the nomination, this fight is a long way from over.
Though Obama has a small lead in delegates, there are still nearly 1,000 (991) delegates left to be decided in the remaining primaries and caucuses. Then on to the Democratic National Convention in Denver where the Super Delegates could decide among themselves who the nominee will be.
It may be exciting to watch the results come in on the evenings that the polls close, but the reality of the matter is that Super Delegates can vote for whomever they choose, NO MATTER HOW THEIR STATE VOTED. Unless one of the candidates actually gets the 2,025 delegates needed before the convention, there will be some real politicking going on, and this could mean a backlash for the Democrats.
The fact that Super Delegates make up 20% of the entire number of delegates at the convention means that anything can happen. What if that 20% goes against what Democrats have voted for across the nation? And what about the voters in Michigan and Florida? Are they going to have ANY opportunity to have their voices heard?
The buzz in the media now is how so many African-American Super Delegates who had pledged to Clinton are looking to switch their allegiance to Obama, now that it looks like he could actually secure the nomination against the powerful Clinton machine. Hmmmm.
In a year that has seen the longest-running campaigns ever, and unprecedented turnouts at the polls, it looks like we have to wait until the DNC happens to learn who the Democrats will select to carry their banner. Denver may very well be the scene of a huge political upset. What a system!
Oh, by the way, John McCain has been winning everything so far in his march to the GOP nomination. It looks like Texas, with it’s huge number of delegates, will be the deciding factor for Mike Huckabee. If he loses there, he may as well pack up and go home.
