Obama Followers Demand New Rules!
Just in case you thought this was a quiet weekend before the big Ohio and Texas primaries on Tuesday, you’d be mistaken.
Naturally, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John McCain and yes, even Mike Huckabee, are everywhere at once trying to drum up votes and support for themselves. It’s pretty much the same old “I’m better than my opponent” or “I’m better for America” scenario, no matter which candidate you are referring to.
I can take all of that pretty much in stride. After all, it’s what we’ve come to expect from ANY campaign, even one that’s lasted this long.
But when you try to tell me what’s funny and what’s not funny, then I have to draw the line!
In this age of “political correctness”, the political-correctness-watchdogs have been getting more powerful, and are intimidating the heck out of anybody they decide to chew up. Many citizens just sit quietly at home, afraid to raise their voice (or put a nativity set on their lawn), for fear of litigation, or attack in and out of the media.
Now, the eyes of the political-correctness-watchdogs have focused on Saturday Night Live, one of the most blatantly irreverent traditions in TV comedy.
For years, Lorne Michaels and his band of merry men & women have been tickling our funny bones with wacky skits and jokes about everything from shark messenger boys to “noogies” to Samurais. Some years they were funnier than others, but we kept going back for more.
They’ve parodied so many political figures, including all the recent Presidents, Attorney Generals, etc. that we’ve come to expect a distorted take on just about anything. Just being in the political spotlight makes you fair game for those ‘pot shots’. Ask George W. AKA ‘Dubbayew’!
But now they’ve stepped in deep doo doo! These “politically incorrect MONSTERS” did a skit about Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and they used a NON-African-American comedian to portray Obama. It doesn’t matter that they’ve skewered everybody from George Bush to Jesse Jackson to Bill Clinton to Janet Reno and beyond. It doesn’t matter that they auditioned all the male comedians in their cast to find the best impersonization. No, they didn’t select an “African-American” to play the part, and the watchdogs are frothing at the mouth.
This furor is another indication of problems that need to be resolved in this country. Whatever happened to finding “the best man (woman) for the job”? Should race be the sole determinant in the selection process? What about qualifications? And why didn’t Janet Reno make a big stink when SNL chose to have Will Ferrell impersonate her?
Way to go, Lorne Michaels! I realize it’s not considered politicially correct to choose the best person for the job anymore, but I’ll be watching to see what other funny things you have to share with the world this week.
I’m listening and I’m learning and I’m wondering . . . who will people vote for in November. Will it be the best-qualified candidate? Or will it simply be a matter of race?
