Gotta Show Your Picture to Vote!

The Atlanta Journal Constitution led today with the story that a local judge struck down a motion by the Democratic Party in Georgia, to rule as “unconstitutional” a law that requires a picture ID to vote.

The Dems say it places a hardship on disabled or poor voters. How can that be?

I’m disabled, yet I still have a picture ID (one on my driver’s license and one on my concealed weapons permit). How can anyone function ANYWHERE without some type of photo ID? How can you cash checks, including disability or welfare checks without ID?

Voting irregularities have gone on for years and years, and the only way to determine that someone is a LEGITIMATE REGISTERED VOTER is to check their ID against the voter registration polls. I don’t understand why getting a government photo ID should be a problem. If you ACTUALLY register to vote at the Department of Motor Vehicles, you can get your photo ID at the same time.

Years ago, shortly after I moved to South Carolina from California, I was a poll worker. When I saw, and protested, voting irregularities (including several “Reverends” accompanying three or four of their congregation into the booth at a time - to show them where to make their mark on the ballot), I was told to ignore the issue. “That’s just the way it’s done here!”

Now, with an influx of illegal aliens dispersed throughout the state of Georgia, and elsewhere, it seems even more important to verify that anyone who marks a ballot BE a registered voter. Not only a legitimate registered voter, they need to be able to PROVE that they are who they say they are.

Many years ago, when I was still living in California, I discovered the hard way that someone else was using my Social Security number for an ID and employment. It was a mess to straighten out, and yes, it involved illegal immigration issues. So don’t think it doesn’t happen.

My only question is, “Why is the Georgia Democratic Party OPPOSED to picture IDs?” Why wouldn’t every honest, legitimately-registered voter be happy to prove their identity?

You fergot the RaceCard, since Minorities are somehow also too poor or disadvantaged to get picture IDs.
Seriously, Liberals, friends of the ‘little people’..shouldn’t they be more concerned with ‘You can’t get an ID!?!’ rather than ‘You can’t vote without an ID?!?’.
Only, they’ll never admit #1 is rarely a problem. I’ve been poor, not homeless poor but pretty damn close, scraping up enough change to take the bus to get an ID and a welfare check(I had a GF with kids, thas the only reason I accepted FoodStamps), and I got it done.
The ‘Too poor to get an ID’ argument just doesn’t hold water. I was literally collecting rainwater to save on my water bill, and still able to get a picture ID.
Too poor to get to yer voting station, and garbage gerrymandering..those can be valid arguments. But I guess it’s asking too much for the politicos to talk real solutions to real problems.
Seriously, do these people remember..they do live in the 1st World, right? Noone has to spend a week’s wages hiring a donkey cart to travel 40 miles, bribe several guards at military checkpoints and bring an extra special present for the government official in order to get a picture ID so ya can vote.
Heck, here in Florida, ya don’t even havta be able to READ to get a state picture ID. Let alone speak English. Sign the forms in Spanish, Swahili or Cambodian. You give em the proper paperwork and 5-10 bucks..you get yer ID.
Also, think ya hit the nail on the head when ya mentioned illegal voters. It’s especially galling from the political party yelling the loudest about voter fraud. Hell, I may even agree with the libs on some of their points about the NeoCon PoliceState…but it’s seriously messed up when it’s easier to vote for the future of this country than it is to get on a domestic flight.

    Dear KeaponLaffin,

I’ve been poor too! You know, digging through the couch cushions to gather change to buy a box of macaroni and cheese? (19 to 25 cents at the time, depending on brand) Then I had to walk 1.5 miles to the nearest grocery store, and 1.5 miles back, ’cause I had no car. No matter what my financial situation was, I always had a picture ID.

I simply can’t understand why ANY political party would be OPPOSED to verifying that a potential voter is 1) A legitimate citizen, and legally registered, and 2) can PROVE they are who they say they are.
I’ve done it, without complaint, every time I’ve voted over the last several decades.

Not verifying voters is exactly the same thing as ballot stuffing!

    Thanks for your comment!
