Dirty or Smart Politics on Super Tuesday?

As the votes started pouring in from the long-awaited Super Tuesday primaries and caucuses, the West Virginia caucus was the first state to announce a winner for the GOP side of the ticket. Final score was: Mike Huckabee 52%, Mitt Romney 47% and John McCain 1%. Did I just write 1% for John McCain? How can that be? Everyone predicted that Huckabee and Romney would split the conservative vote, but, c’mon, 1% for McCain? Ah, but that’s not surprising once you discover that John McCain’s supporters threw their votes to Huckabee on the second vote, in order to block Romney, who had won in the first round of voting. Nasty, huh? It’s true and it’s all over the media.

Barack Obama won big in Georgia with an estimated 80% of African-American voters supporting him. Then the evening progressed with Hillary Clinton and Obama dividing up the states and the delegates pretty evenly. Hillary won a few more delegates and Barack won a few more states. So the match-up continues past Super Tuesday on the Democratic side. Looks like Clinton and Obama will be slugging it out, perhaps even until the Democratic Convention. This certainly has not been the runaway landslide that Clinton had initially anticipated.

Looking at the final results from Super Tuesday for the Republicans, it appears that John McCain is now the definite frontrunner, and it’s obvious he owes a big vote of thanks to Mike Huckabee. The media is abuzz with speculation about how McCain will repay him for stopping Romney, who he personally detests. Will this love affair give Huckabee a cabinet post? Or is it possible that there will be a McCain and Huckabee ticket in the future? Hmmmm! No word has been heard yet from Ron Paul, who got great big goose eggs everywhere. But whether Ron Paul stays or goes, looks like we have to wait and see what happens because Romney says he’s staying in the race.

So after all the hoopla, the polls and predictions for Super Tuesday, no candidate has the necessary number of delegates to claim the nomination for either party. Looks like this will be a long, drawn-out battle on both sides. Better get ready for the battles, so you’ll be in shape for the war in November!
