A Time to Speak
In 1972, when I was 12 years old, I remember my dad explaining to me the importance of the two-party system. Back then, the idea that either the Republicans or the Democrats had the people’s interest in mind and would eventually get it right, made sense. It’s now apparent that our “two party” system is in real trouble. Unfortunately, those in power want to stay in power, so they have made it difficult for anyone with alternative and more reasonable solutions to have a voice.
Such conflicts of interest by our politicians will produce ominous results if some dramatic changes don’t occur. Our politicians cannot serve both the people and the power brokers because the interest and needs of these two groups are irreconcilable.
We need more leaders like, Joe Lieberman, who was tossed aside by the extremist in his own party after years of loyal leadership, but still he wins the 2006 general election for senator of Connecticut. Another credible politician who articulates thoughtful and reasoned positions is Mike Huckabee, former Governor of Arkansas, and a 2008 presidential candidate. He speaks eloquently and his ideas have piercing clarity, yet, he gets little attention from the national press. The sad part is that even though these men are real servants of the people, they have been limited, because they will not bow down to the powerful groups that run this nation.
I hope for the day that the clear thinkers in our society once again have a voice. Maybe the goal is not to start a third party movement, but to develop and communicate the best solutions to difficult problems; and to pressure Congress, the White House, and the Courts to do their job. Unlike the shrillness that we hear from the extremes on the left and right, we want workable solutions and real results. Not meaningless compromise or “pep rally” legislation, but reasoned, thoughtful, practical and results oriented approaches to our country’s challenges. As a man noted for his great wisdom once said, “For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven”(World English Bible, Ecclesiastes 3:1)
America, it is time for the rational voices among us to be heard.
