A ‘Miracle’ Candidate for the GOP?

With Mitt Romney suspending his candidacy, his supporters appear to be in shock and depressed. Conservatives keep hoping for a miracle - that SOMEONE will take the Republican nomination besides John McCain. McCain knows he has to have the backing of conservatives, as well as moderates and independents, if he is to have a chance at winning in November. But his stand on so many issues that are dear to conservatives has angered many in that group. Now he is changing his stand on so many of those issues, notably immigration and taxes, that it’s hard to know what his position will be in the future.

About the only way McCain can keep conservatives from staying away from the polls in November is to select a conservative candidate as a running-mate, even though the office of vice-president has traditionally been powerless. Perhaps conservatives would vote for McCain with a ‘true’ conservative running mate, only because they hope he would die soon after assuming the Presidency. Sad!

That’s a terrible thought, but it certainly didn’t originate with me. There’s been a lot of buzz about the topic, especially speculation about a McCain and Mike Huckabee combo. However, pundits have pretty much labeled Huckabee as a “southern-only” candidate, who wouldn’t get McCain the needed votes outside the Bible Belt. Meanwhile, Huckabee has made a public appeal to Romney supporters to switch their allegiance to his campaign. Kind of pathetic when you understand that staunch Romney supporters view Huckabee as the “spoiler” who ruined their man’s chances. Well, politics does make strange bedfellows!

With all the ups and downs of this never-ending campaign season, I’m still really puzzled about something else. People claim they don’t like the way the country is going, yet we have two perfect examples of long-time political pros (and masters of dirty politics) running on both sides - Hillary Clinton for the Dems & Mr. “Straight Talk” McCain for the GOP. Geez! Why can’t people see that BOTH have been neck-deep in everything that is already wrong with politics in the U.S.? It’s amazing that people claim they don’t like corruption, yet they keep voting for the same ole’ things, especially along party lines.

Now that Mitt Romney has suspended his campaign, people are still ridiculing him for paying for his own campaign. It seems that many people are angered that he was wealthy enough to afford to have done so, but all the rest of the candidates, including John & Hillary, Barack Obama, Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul, have been funded by lobbyists and PAC groups. The only other candidate that wasn’t endebted to big campaign contributors was John Edwards, and we know where his campaign went.

Presidential campaigns are big business, and they’re more expensive every year. Do you really think that any candidate, once they’re in the White House but obligated to PACs and lobbyists, will vote for what you (the voter) wants rather than what their money people demand? Wake up or dream on!
