A Lively Debate?
Last night at the South Carolina Democratic debate, we were treated to verbal battles between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Tensions were high as the feud between the Democratic frontrunners escalated into a shouting match. John Edwards probably made his best showing to date, acting far more presidential than either of the other two. The South Carolina primary is hotly contested between the three candidates and the stress is really showing.
On the Republican side, the field is narrowing. Mitt Romney currently leads with the most delegates (59) after the primaries in Nevada and SC on Saturday. Mike Huckabee has the second most (40), with John McCain coming in third (36). Former Ambassador Alan Keyes continues in the campaign, as does Ron Paul, in spite of their poor showings. But Duncan Hunter called it quits after the SC primary on Saturday and Fred Thompson announced his withdrawal this afternoon. That still leaves Rudy Guiliani waiting in Florida, where he hopes to capture the state by a large margin, since that’s where he’s been heavily campaigning.
So all the interested observer can do is watch for the results in South Carolina on Saturday then Florida on Tuesday the 29th. It remains to be seen if there will be a clear-cut winner in either party before Super Tuesday.
